In order to connect a studio located in the attic to their main home, the clients wanted to install an indoor staircase. The location of the opening was chosen precisely to reconcile spatial and static constraints. The selected position allows for smooth circulation and highlights the view offered by the adjacent windows. It also positions the staircase as a free-standing object detached from the walls and allows for drilling the slab at a strategic point that minimizes the need for reinforcement. In order to concentrate the work, the metal staircase transmits its loads to the upper slab. The guardrail bars extend downwards to suspend the staircase, which stops just before touching the ground. Upstairs, the fabrication of a large wall of wooden panels provides a frame for disparate elements such as a wardrobe, the access door to the attic, and the chimney flue, as well as a backdrop to this suspended object.
